Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival 2026: Official Visitor Guide

📍 Pingxi District, New Taipei City | 🏮 Category: Light & Spring Lantern Festival

The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is widely recognized as one of the most mesmerizing cultural gatherings in the world. Originally established during the Qing Dynasty to inform villagers that the area was safe from bandits, releasing sky lanterns has evolved into a symbol of peace, hope, and collective human goodwill.

Origins and Spiritual Significance

Each lantern released during the festival carries calligraphy handwritten by festival-goers. Prayers for health, financial prosperity, romance, and academic success are penned across four distinct colored paper walls before the candle beneath is ignited.

How to Attend the 2026 Synchronized Releases

While individuals release small sky lanterns along the Old Street railways throughout the year, the main event features massive, synchronized mass releases conducted in 8 to 10 sequential waves at the Pingxi Junior High School main grounds.

To participate in official synchronized launches, visitors must register early on the day of the event at the official visitor center tent near Shifen Railway Station. Free entry tickets are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:00 AM.

Transport & Travel Tips

During the official festival dates, private vehicle access into Pingxi and Shifen is strictly restricted. Visitors should board the direct event shuttles from Zoo MRT Station or take the historic Pingxi Railway Line from Ruifang Station.
